MathWorks recently shared an article about the Ascento robot and the team behind it, recalling the exhausting work needed to go from an idea to a fully working system.
Instead of trying out the newly developed control algorithms directly on the real system, we tested everything in a simulation environment. We used MATLAB and Simulink to tune the balancing algorithms and, once they worked well in simulation, transferred the tuned parameters over to the real Ascento robot. It was without a doubt a very important tool in our development process.
